Raigarh deserves a visit that goes beyond a single landmark. Its craft traditions, temples and nearby natural sites can fill a short trip with variety, provided I give each stop enough time. I started my journey in the city, where the journeys between places were shorter, then headed out to Ram Jharna the next morning. That left an afternoon free for anything I want to revisit before travelling home.
Kosa silk and Dhokra crafts reveal Raigarh’s creative side
My first destination was a shop that sells Kosa silk. Raigarh’s location in one of the most pioneering silk industries enabled me to closely observe the fabric and its patterns while finding out what goes into creating the final piece. Besides Kosa silk, I would look for Dhokra metalwork, a craft universal to the district. A glance would provide something concrete with which to connect with the place.
Raigarh’s performing arts story is worth mentioning as well. Maharaja Chakradhar Singh’s contribution played a vital role in making Raigarh a musical and dancing town due to its association with Kathak. Before my arrival, I would check on this history. I would also check if Chakradhar Samaroh was taking place during my time there.
This made a gentle start to the itinerary. I could explore the shops in the morning, have lunch in town and leave the afternoon for Raigarh’s temples.
Raigarh’s Gaurishankar Temple and Shyam Temple fit into an afternoon
Gaurishankar Temple and Shyam Temple are both part of Raigarh’s temples. I visited them after lunch, which gave me ample time at each instead of just stopping for a photo. I would also check their visiting hours in advance, especially whenever I was running late or had to get back for dinner. If there was sufficient time in the afternoon, I would consider visiting Pahad Mandir too.
When looking at hotels in Raigarh, I picked one that suits this city-centred part of the trip and made the next morning’s departure straightforward. A useful location gave me more time at the places I came to see.
Ram Jharna brings Raigarh’s nature and local tradition together
I allocated a morning to Ram Jharna. This natural spring is situated around 18 kilometres from the district headquarters, and the local myth connects it with Lord Ram. After a crafts- and temple-focused day, it brings in a change of ambience while still being part of the region’s cultural narrative.
After breakfast, I travelled to the spring to spend some time, and then returned to Raigarh for lunch. I pre-arranged transport in both directions and, thus, had the morning free for this visit. With the main excursion over, this afternoon can remain relaxed.
Raigarh’s Gomarda Wildlife Sanctuary deserves more time
I wish I had more time, as I would have visited Gomarda Wildlife Sanctuary separately. It is about 60 kilometres away from Raigarh District Headquarters, and it might take a day to cover it properly and check what arrangements are made for visitors. If you are looking for a longer duration in the region’s natural surroundings, this is a perfect addition.
A shorter trip can consist of Kosa silk, Dhokra art, city temples and Ram Jharna, which will give me a good tour of the sightseeing spots. Next time, I will select places to stay in Raigarh based on this route and also leave some time for improvised plans.

A short Raigarh visit with plenty to remember
I left Raigarh feeling that I had seen several sides of the city. The crafts show its creative skill, the temples invited me to spend time in its everyday spaces, and Ram Jharna took me beyond the streets for a change of scenery. Each stop added something different. If I had another day, I would return to Gomarda Wildlife Sanctuary; for this trip, I would be glad I had taken the time to explore Raigarh at a comfortable pace.
